The year 2020 has been a year defined by hardship and change. We can thank COVID-19 for that. Events like birthdays, sporting events, anniversaries, and weddings have been either postponed or canceled due to the pandemic. Though Covid-19 has caused a lot of pain and heartache, as humans, we can always try to find a silver lining. We can still live our lives, it just might look a little different. It is human nature to dwell on what this year could have been, but today we are going to change our outlook and think about all that we can still do!
1. Social Distance Bonfire
Who doesn’t love to sit around a warm fire with family and friends (6ft. apart of course)? Fall is the perfect season for a bonfire. Take advantage of the mild fall nights that the season brings, as we know in South Dakota, the harsh winter is just around the corner.
2. Game Night
Go back to when you were a kid and whip out those board games that bring nostalgia. Battleship and Sorry! are two of my all-time favorites! If you are looking for new, family-fun games, you’re in luck because I have a list of new games that I got off Amazon.com that are perfect for game night. If you like getting to know your family and friends, True Colors is the game for you. You’re given a scenario and you vote on who is most likely to perform the action described in the scenario. Beware… it can become intense!
Do you ever find yourself talking in a different accent? If so,Utter Nonsense is a necessity in your game room. In this game, you’re given an accent and a phrase to say. Some are human accents and some are animal voices. Prepare to laugh your head off when you play this game.
Don’t want to spend money but want to play a new game? Download Psych! This game can be downloaded via Androids or iOS. It comes with multiple mini-games and the best part is… You can play wherever and whenever! You don’t even need to be with people to play this game. All you need to reunite you and your friends in the game is the game code and an internet connection.
3. Drive-In Theater
Thanks to COVID-19, drive-in movie theaters have made a comeback. Lucky for us South Dakotans, we live near one. The Verne Drive-In Theater is the perfect place to have a great time. They get new movies every Tuesday and tickets are only $5!
4. Corn Maze
Do you like solving things? If so, go to the Heartland County Corn Maze located southeast of Harrisburg, SD. Every year they have a new 11-acre map carved out of corn stalks. It features 10 checkpoints that contain answers to the maze and if you find the hidden checkpoint then you will receive a free snack from concessions! This year with COVID-19, they have made wider paths to accommodate social distancing, single-use disposable maps, and pencils to limit contact, and high-touch services will be sanitized on a routine basis. Admission is $8, children 5-10 are $5, and kids 4 and under are free!
5. Around-The-Town Scavenger Hunt
A great activity to get everyone out of the house but remain safely distanced from others is an around-the-town scavenger hunt. You can go about this in many different ways, but I will give you a suggestion. One person can act as the director and come up with clues that eventually lead teams around town to different locations where other clues will be. The first team to successfully figure out all the clues and make it to each location is the winner. Whether you want to do an actual prize or just bragging rights, a scavenger hunt is a fun way to spend a Saturday.
This is the perfect time to do those DIY’s that have been on your list. Pinterest and diys.com offer a plethora of fun and practical DIY’s for anyone!
